Disaster Struck Cagayan De Oro

On Dec. 16, 2011, I felt that a storm was brewing. The day started out sunny and suddenly, dark clouds came over and the wind picked up. By the time I went home, it was raining in torrents.

Around 12mn of Dec. 17, the rain lightened up a bit but the wind was getting stronger by the minute. I feared our roof might just get blown away. Electricity was gone and around 3am, our tree got uprooted and thankfully, fell on the road, missing the two cars parked in between.

In the morning, I thought that it was just a typical tropical storm our city normally experiences. It totally took us all by surprise to find out that a flash flood happened and there were casualties amounting to more than a hundred.

We were supposed to have a Christmas party for kids that day but on the way to the office, I saw people covered in mud, things and animals, all muddy. The sun came out and dried up the roads a bit but the aftermath was overwhelming.

The aqua blue portion was the original riverflow. The areas in green was the flash flood. Due to balding mountains and poor efforts to replant trees, we have experienced the wrath of Mother Nature.

Since that fateful day, I was sick. Maybe it was stress, the water or even the air, I had stomachache, migraine, and nausea. I went to the doctor and they diagnosed me to be overfatigued and stressed. Told me to rest, drink multivitamins and just relax.

For those who want to help typhoon Sendong’s victims, here are some ways:
